One of the greatest joys of our work at Pennsylvania Weddings Magazine is sharing gorgeous weddings from our home state with all of you. As thrilled as we are to turn over these beautiful weddings to you as we release each new issue, the moment is also a little bittersweet. We miss chatting with the couples we feature, and we’re also left wondering what has happened next for them in their journeys together.

Because we can’t be the only ones feeling a little curious, we thought we would circle back with one of our couples to check in about where they went on their honeymoon, whether they would change anything about their wedding day as they celebrate their first anniversary, and what advice they have for other couples embarking on their first 365 days of marriage.

In this first edition of “After the “I Do”, we’re catching up with Kayla, our Volume 3 cover bride, as she and her husband Curran celebrate their first marriage milestone—their first anniversary. Below, Kayla reminisces about the fairytale day she experienced with Curran as they wed at the Ballroom at Ellis Preserve, what they’ve done since their wedding day (hint: they’ve reached big career milestones!), what they’ve realized they value, and so much more.

After The I Do Kayla and Curran

Pennsylvania Weddings Magazine: What have you two been up to since your wedding?

Kayla Gibbons: Since the wedding, we’ve been focused on our careers. Curran is a chef at Jean George, which is located in Philadelphia. Kayla is currently a therapist at the Child Guidance Resource Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We are working towards buying a home, and eventually having children.

PWM: Did you go on a honeymoon, or do you have plans to?

KG: We had our honeymoon at The Excellence Club in Cancun, Mexico. We spent the week enjoying the beach, exploring new foods, riding ATVs, and zip lining! It was truly a fairytale honeymoon, and we highly recommend this resort for future couples!

PWM: As you look back on your wedding, is there anything you might do differently?

KG: If we could do anything differently, it would be to not stress about certain details. It’s important to understand that your vendors want the best for your big day. Everything will fall into place. Do not worry about if it rains, or if certain family members will not show up. We spent months worrying about “what ifs”, and our wedding was truly the most special day of our lives!

PWM: It’s been a little over a year since your August 2022 wedding, so tell us about your first year of marriage.

KG: Our first year of marriage has taught us so much. We learned how to navigate life’s challenges together. We are not only husband and wife, but we are best friends as well. Our first year as a married couple has felt amazing, and we are looking forward to our future together.

PWM: What advice do you have for other couples after the wedding?

KG: Marriage is about sacrifice and taking risks. You will learn so much about yourself and your partner in the first year of being married. Our biggest advice is to never stop “dating” your partner. Oftentimes, we find ourselves busy with work and everyday obligations. But we’ve never stopped having date nights, or cooking dinner at home together. We love to have game nights in our apartment and go downtown to our favorite restaurants. It’s important to keep the flame alive in your marriage, and enjoy every second of it!
